Costa Maya is a region in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The area falls under the western lowlands bordering Belize, and includes two villages – Mahahual and Xcalak. The Mayan tribe was predominant in the region from 200 BC to 900 AD, when they developed the skills to build the historic cities we know today. During this period, the Mayan people traded a variety of goods, such as fabrics and jade, along the Mexican coast. Because of two openings in the barrier reef, the village of Xcalak in the Costa Maya region was used as a landing point for trade ships.
